Ukrainian Bishop Takes Christmas Service
Ukrainian families in Christchurch were able to celebrate Christmas in traditional manner when they held a service on Friday evening. The Most Rev. Ivan Prasko. Apostolic Exarch for the Ukrainians of the Byzantine rite in Australia and New Zealand, spept Christmas with his people in Christchurch on
his way back to Australia, from the Vatican Council. Bishop Prasko, celebrated Christmas here by joining a family feast in the home of one of the 12 Ukrainian families in the area. In Australia he will still be in time for Christmas festivities, as Ukrainians there will observe Christmas according to the Julian calendar, some 13 days after the Gregorian Christmas on December 25. Bishop Prasko attended three sessions of the Vatican Council as an observer. He
studied for the priesthood in Lviv, in the Ukraine, was ordained in 1939, and consecrated a bishop in 1958. During the service on Friday the families sang traditional twelfth and fifteenth century carols. Ukrainian families in Christchurch usually attend services at a Roman Catholic church. There are about 60 Ukrainian families in New Zealand and Bishop Prasko has tried to see as many of these as possible during his brief visit to New Zealand.
