U.S. ROAD TOLL
505 Deaths At Christmas
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)
CHICAGO, Dec. 26.
The Christmas week-end death toll on American roads rose at a record rate today as millions of motorists moved through snow, rain and strong winds in many areas. By late afternoon the death toll had reached 505.
The president of the National Safety Council (Mr H Pyle) said, “The traffic death toll is running disturbingly ahead of last year’s Christmas experience, when the final toll was 578. Unless the rate falls off, this could be the worst three-day Christmas.” The present record for a three-day Christmas period is 609 deaths in 1955.
