Harewood’s New Post

Lord Harewood, former artistic director of the Edinburgh Festival, has been appointed full-time artistic adviser to London’s Philharmonta Orchestra. The New Philharmonia is the orchestra which refused to die when its activities as the Philharmonia were suspended last year by its founder. Waiter Legge, on his retirement

From 1946 Legge built the Philharmonia into one of the world’s great orchestras by providing plenty of recording work and by having such eminent conductors as Karajan and Klemperer. Because his standards were fanatically high, costs were rising and record income fating, Legge refused any compromise and decided to disband the orchestra.

The players, with the good will of the public and conductor, decided to continue under their own management. Since last March they have toured South America and played at New York and at the Edinburgh Festival. Last month the New Philharmonia with Klemperer and Munch toured Europe.
