impressed as a sound stayer. He has drawn favourably at Ashburton and will have to show very little improvement on his run at Rangiora to be one of those in the finish. * It is unfortunate that Co Pilot is not in the Ashburton race. His trainer, G. Holmes, will be represented by Morant, which showed speed to finish fifth after a slow start in his division of the Maiden Handicap. Alray did best of the other Champion Stakes candidates to contest the Challenge Stakes when he finished fifth. He had every chance, but did not produce the dash expected in the run home. Few of the other three-year-olds to race at Rangiora did much to enhance their prospects at Ashburton where their rivals will include Courtier and Inky Boy. Courtier has run to advantage at trials since he failed in the New Zealand Derby Stakes, and Inky Boy has had a chance to freshen since he was nosed into second place by Bass Strait in the same race.

Batavia received surprisingly strong support at Rangiora and started the 2/2 favourite. He met trouble early in the run home and fell. At the time he seemed to be pacing fairly well, but he was still giving the leaders a fair start. If he has taken no ill effects from that incident, Batavia eould add interest to the Ashburton classic. Gore (N.Z. Preus Association) GORE. The T.A.B. double at the Boxing Day meeting of the Gore Trotting Club next Monday will be on the Gore Trotting Cup and President's Handicaps. Acceptances: 11.30 a.m._
