Cashed 35 Worthless Cheques In Eight Days
(N.I. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Dec. 18. In eight days at the end of 1983 a man wrote 35 false cheques to obtain money, goods and accommodation worth £lOB9 12s Id. the Magistrate’s Court was told. Brian Lewis Thiwaites. aged 40, a clothing salesman, admitted 35 charges of false pretences and three charges of obtaining credit by fraud when he appeared before Mr H. Jenner Wily, Slf., who remanded him in custody for It took more than half in hour to read the charges to Thwaites and record his pleas. Detective£ergeant J. Sheehan said that on the afternoon of Christmas Eve, 1983, Thwaites opened a cheque account with a bank under the name K. J. Powell. He deposited £l4 17s M and was issued with a book of 30 cheques. That day Thwaites wrote 14 cheques, obtaining dothing and jewellery from city stores. Before leaving for Wellington on December 27, 1983, on a ticket obtained by a false cheque, Thwaites had passed 22 valueless cheques. In Wellington he passed six
