Mr Cart Barrett, an American oM company president and the man who stimulated the development of the town of Santa Claus 80 years ago, will visit New Zealand on February during a South Pacific cruise. The residents of Santa Fe changed the town’s name to Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, 1887, when a meteor was seen falling from the Sky. The crater formed by the meteor became the focal point of the 32-acre Santa deus Park, which Mr Barrett developed. Mrigued by the village name and the story behind it, Mr Barrett built a 22ft stone replica of Santa Claus dedicated "to the children of the world in memory of an undying love.” The 20-ton statue, with a Star of Bethlehem base, brought world-wide recognition to the town. Thousands of children throughout the world have received postcards from Santa Claus m answer to their Christmas letters requesting everything from sleds to baby brother* and sister*. More than 12,000 cards and letters are received each year by Mr Barrett, his pork manager and ""futT? year* Mr Barrett and hi* email staff replied to each letter. Twelve yeas* ago the American Legion poet in Santa Claus took ever the task. Santa Ctaua to M miles north-east of Evansville in a rieh fanning arsa. M has 100 residents.
