(Net. Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Dec. 17. Ruscombe Munro Ashley, aged 25, a fellmonger, said he was using marijuana found in his possession yesterday to help him stay off heroin, to which he had been addicted, the Magistrate’s Court was told today. Detective-Sergeant A. H. Hart said police, acting on information, had approached
Ashley on a Wellington street yesterday and questioned him. Ashley said he had recently become addicted to heroin overseas but he denied having any in New Zealand. Police found a small amount of marijuana in Ashley's pockets. He said it was all that was left of what he had brought to New Zealand when he arrived last month. He said he had cured himself of heroin, and he smoked marijuana occasionally to keep himself off heroin. Asked by Mr J. B. Thomson, S.M., if he had anything to say, Ashley said: “I hope it doesn’t happen again, sir.” Ashley was remanded for a week for a probation report.
