VALUATE TENTH
Still Cup Favourite (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ADELAIDE. The New Zealand-bred Valuate, favourite for the £8258 Port Adelaide Cup at Cheltenham on December 28, is still a strong fancy, although he ran only tenth in a field of 16 in the 12furlong Challenge Stakes at Cheltenham on Saturday. Valuate firmed in the cup favouritism after his brilliant win over a mile in the Adelaide Town Plate at Victoria Parte a fortnight ago. In this week’s race the New Zealander drew wide and covered a tremendous amount of extra ground. Valuate started favourite at 9/4. He was ridden by the Melbourne Cup - winning jockey R. Higgins, who gave up another engagement at Moonee Valley yesterday to get a ride* on Valuate before the cup. Higgins will again have the mount in the cup.
The winner of the Challenge Stakes was Bright Blend, a New Zealand-bred gelding by Summertime. Bright Blend (10/1) beat Marchant (20/1) by threequarters of a length with Rack and Ruin (20/1) a short half-head away third. Three others winners at Cheltenham were bred in New Zealand. Theye were Galilee (by Alcimedes), which was a hot 7/4 on favourite for the lOj-furiong Birkenhead Handicap, Secret Field, 10/9 favourite over seven furlongs, and another Summertime horse, Sun Lad, which won at his first start over hurdles.
