Holy Hal Takes Juvenile Race
Holy Hal, a member of D. Todd’s Mataura team, recorded a splendid win in the Rangiora Raceway Stakes on Saturday.
He was a shade slow early and he raced fairly wide for the first furlong. He ranged up to be handyat the straight entrance and soon took the measure of Lilly Anne.
Raced by Messrs J. R. Rodgers and D. Keenan, Holy Hal is a colt by Hal Tryax from Sandra Kay, the dam also of Holy Smoke, Lusty Lad and Young Lad. Lilly Anne, a useful third at Waimate a week earlier, set a sound pace and led for home from Reporter, Adios King, Holy Hal, Mokoreta, Really Good and Desperate. Holy Hal soon joined Lilly Anne and he proved much too good over the last halffurlong. He won by a length, with Lilly Anne finishing almost four lengths in front of Adios King, which shaded Reporter. A length back Desperate finished gamely for fifth, just ahead of Really Good, At-
las, Semloh, Mokoreta and Montage.
Really Good, Semloh, Montage, Inspire, Lucky Gay and Golden Hind lost ground early. Driver Fined At Rangiora J. B. Noble, the driver of Abbey Frost in the Challenge Stakes at Rangiora on Saturday, was fined £2O for careless driving causing interference to Batavia, which fell. Abbey Frost was disqualified from second place and Shadydale and Roydon Prince promoted to second and third respectively. R. A. Belcher, the trainer of Flak, a Rangiora Cup runner, was told that the horse’s racing manners must be improved.
