Flight Adios Has Easy Win In Rangiora Cup
Flight Adios extended an already fine record this season with a decisive win over the favourite, Bright Highland, in the Rangiora Cup on Saturday. |
His chances did not look bright near the half-mile, where he was some distance from the lead. However, he sprinted up soon after and he was vieing for the lead at the straight entrance.
He was soon dear and had the field at his mercy half a furlong - out. Happy took the lead after two furlongs and set a sound I pace, with Flight Adios back in the middle of the field. ' The field bunched about the half-mile, with Powerful Light sprinting up to take the lead a furlong later. He was joined by Bright Highland and Flight Adios racing to the straight, with Happy, Flying Over and Tuarangi Chief showing up. Flight Adios was soon dear and D. G. McCormick did not have to drive him out to win by three lengths from Bright Highland, which just lasted to beet the faster-finishing Legendary by half a head for second. Indecision, which had considerable difficulty working clear of a pocket on the inside, finished gamely for fourth, but was two lengths back, a short length in front of Ulove, with Powerful
Light, Town Martial, Tuarangi Chief and Siki next. Flak and Powerful Light became entangled at the start, and Sand Drift, Flying Over, Golden Sari, Tuarangi Chief and Carina Star lost ground. Second Win Co Pilot followed up a win in the Orari Challenge Stakes with an equally impressive win in the Challenge Stakes, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. The Flight Adios-Co Pilot double paid £4B 8s for £l.
Co Pilot is not engaged in the New Zealand Champion Stakes next Monday and he will probably have his next start at Addington early next month. Lustre Scott set the pace from Abbey Frost, Co Pilot, Alray, Proudly and Marty, with Roydon Prince handy. Marty improved to take a short lead at the three furlongs and was joined soon after by Proudly. They were followed into the straight by
Compromise, Alray, Co Pilot, Abbey Frost and Shadydale.
Abbey Frost was pulled back to work clear of the rails and Proudly, Co Pilot and Shadydale were almost on terms at the furlong, where Batavia met trouble and fell. Co Pilot soon shook off his nearest rivals and then Abbey Frost came fast on the extreme outside of the track. Co Pilot held on to win by a length, with Abbey Frost recording a fine trial for the Champion Stakes. Shadydale. which started from 24 yards, did well to finish third a length and a half back, half a head in front of Roydon Prince. Proudly was a fair fifth, ahead of Alray, Marty and Compromise. An inquiry was held into the second placing, Abbey Frost being disqualified. Shadydale was promoted to second, Roydon Prince to third and Proudly to fourth. Maluka, which was pulled up, Gold Boa, Stormy Scott, Have Care, Belle Luronne, Compromise and Local Star lost ground at the start.
