D. MACKENZIE BEATS N.Z. CHAMPION IN SPRINTS

The double national sprint champion, A. G. Steel, was beaten twice at the inter-club athletics meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday by the former sprint champion and national 440 yards champion, D. W. Mackenzie. .

The races were the long-awaited clash of the province’s three top sprinters—Mackenzie, Steel, and the fast improving D. Minards.

It was the first time this season that all three had met in the same races—and the clashes were awaited with an eager suspense that had not been apparent at previous meetings. At the inter-provincial contest in Dunedin a week ago, Mackenzie shaded Steel for second in the 100 yards in 9.7 sec, and Steel took the furlong, which Mackenzie did not contest, in an excellent 21.7 sec from Minards. Mackenzie left no doubt about his ability in the longer event on Saturday, however. Although Mackenzie’s time of 22.25ec did not rival Steel’s time on the fast all-weather trade at Dunedin this was no doubt attributable to the grass surface and head wind at Rugby Park. There was no doubting Mackenzie's superiority as he dashed to a three-yard win. The air of expectancy for the main event, the 220 yards, was intensified by the clash to the post-entry 75 yards st the start of the programme. Mackenzie scampered through the short event in 7.9 sec, ahead of Minards and Steel. Nor did Mackenzie leave any doubt about the issue in the furlong. Driving powerfully from the blocks, he quickly raced up on those in the outside lanes and bunt away up the final straight. For good measure Mackenzie finished the day with electrifying dash to win the relay for University, overcoming the seemingly impossible 4-yard lead to High School Old Boys to the final 110 yard leg.

The national women’s sprint champion, Mias L. HurreU, won her event in equally convincing fashion. She took the 75 yards by a good two yards from Mias B. Poulsen in B.Bsec but in the furlong she outclassed the opposition by 13 yards in 25.55ec. Mlle Record Under-age athletes continued their record breaking ways. Two new times were achieved but because of a technicality application will be made for only one to be approved as a Canterbury record. In a virtual solo run New Brighton’s B. Rollo slashed the under-15 boys’ mile record with a run of train 34sec. The new time took more than lOsec off the train 44.1 sec set by J. Sheddan (Olympic) at the and of last season. A Technical quartet cut the record for the girls’ under 17 four by 110 yards relay. Their time of 51.2 sec improved by O.Ssec the time made by another Technical team nearly two years sgo. Because this event was amalgamated with the senior event the time will not qualify for recognition as a record, however. The successful team was Misses A. Leeburn, S. Flynn, B. Poulsen and S. Lagrosse. Three Mlles In another lonely run, J. D. Macdonald was close to rivalling his best three-mile time in a race in which interest was largely concentrated on the tightly knit bunch battling for second. With a time of about 14mta 26.65ec, Macdonald was about six seconds short of his best. Running with powerful rhythm for the first two miles Macdonald seemed likely to go close to 14min lOsec but then he slumped badly for three laps before rallying with a last-lap SP New' Zealand Universities' three mile champion J. Power showed rare form for one with only three days' training behind him. Power took second place in 14min 46.8 sec with a powerful run over the last mile. A former junior distance champion, B. Dyer, ran his best half-mile, winning the senior A event in Hnln 56”7sec. This was an improvement of l.fisec on his time of three weeks ago. After battling out the early stages with the men’s senior B competitors, Mrs M. A. M. Stephen failed to sustain the pace set by the leaders and tapered on to 2min Usee for her half-mile.
