TENNIS Avonside Suffers First Defeat
The loss of the New Zealand women’s tennis champion, Mrs R. Davy, has affected the chances of the Avonside team in the senior women’s competition. After winning its three matches in the first round, Avonside suffered its first defeat on Saturday when Edgeware won, 4 matches to 2.
In the other contest Elmwood beat Shirley by 6 matches to 0, and this enabled it to move to one point from Avonside. The points are: Avonside 46, Elmwood 45, Edgeware 31, Shirley 4.
Mrs B. McNicol has taken the top position in the Avonside team, and although she fought hard for her first Mt against Mim S. Field, she found her opponent’s well-
placed drives too much in the second. Miss Field won, 9-7, 4-2. The 14-year-old Miss R. Dillon (Edgeware), one of a highly promising group of young girls in Christchurch, scored a meritorious win over Mrs A. Grant, 6-2, 6-4. Too Much Variety Mrs Grant has been one of the most successful club players In the competition in recent seasone but Miss DHlon’s game had too much variety for her. Miss J. Habgood, another of the group, gave a similar performance when she boat Mrs D. Macdonald, 6-0, 6-4. In the other fixture two other young players. Mines J. Bishop and R. Legge (Elmwood), also scored good wins. Miss Bishop, who participated In the trials for the Wilson Cup team in Wellington last week, was given strong opposition by Mrs B. Leopold, top for Shirley in the absence of Miss D. Smith, but won, 7-6, 6-4, 6-1. Results: Avonzlda v. Edgeware Singles.—Mrs B. Nicol lost to Miss S. Field, 7-8. 2-6; Mrs A. Grant lost to Miss R. Dillon. 2-6, 4-6; Mrs D. Macdonald lost to Miss J. Habgood, 0-6, 4-6; Miss S. Peters beat Miss R. Waites, 6-0. 6-3. Doubles.—Mrs McNicol and Miss Peters lost to Mieses Field and Dillon, 0-6, 6-4, 3-6; Mesdames Grant and Macdonald beat Misses Habgood and Waites, 6-0, 6-3. Edgewars won by 4 matches to 3. Elmwood v. Shirley Singles.—Miss J. Bishop beat Mrs B. Leopold, 7-0, 6-4, 6-1; Mies R. Legge beat Miss G. Hampton, 6-1, 6-2; Mies A. Lawrence beat Mrs A. Riley, 6-3, 6-0; Miss G. PaiWrer beat Miss N. Baty, 6-3, 6-1. Doubles .—Misses Bishop and Legge beat Mrs Leopold and Miss Hampton, 6-2, 6-2; Misses Lawrence and PaUilser beat Mrs Riley and Miss Baty, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Elmwood won by 6 matches to 0.
