Rain Washes Out Hawke Cup Elimination

There was no decision reached in the scheduled two-day Hawke Cup elimination cricket match between Ashburton and North Canterbury, played at Dudley Park, Rangiora, the second day’s play yesterday being washed out. Winning the toss. Ashburton batted first on Saturday. On a ?;ood pitch and helped by a ■st outfield, the opening batsmen. G. Lane and D. Isherwood, scored quickly. The first 100 came in 90 minutes, and by lunch the score was 147 for two wickets, both claimed by A. F. Rapley. Lane was well caught on the mid-field boundary by P. Rutherford, and Isherwood was bowled by Rapley only three runs short of his century. B. Sampson and B. Isherwood were both dismissed by brilliant legside catches by the young North Canterbury keeper. R. Judson, when they appeared set for big scores.

Strong batting by K. Butler moved the scoring rate, and Ashburton was all out for 327, 15 minutes after the tea break. North Canterbury’s first wicket fell with 50 runs on the board and the second at 82. Both the openers were run out by smart fielding returns. R. Nlckolson made the ball lift occasionally, but the dramatic change In the game came when the tall left-arm bowler, A. Tuite. came on. By stumps he had bowled 11 overs, eight of which were maidens, and had taken two wickets for eight runs. North Canterbury was 109 for five wickets at stumps. Heavy rain yesterday cancelled any play, and it is likely there will be a replay of this elimination match. Detailed scores were:— ASHBURTON First Innings
