Monowai Unbeaten In Women’s Softball

Monowai retained its unbeaten record with an easy win against Western Suburbs in the women’s softball competition on Saturday. Avon did not gain the lead until the fifth innings and was kept up to its work to hold West Old Girls at bay. Kaiapoi had its second win of the season by beating Spreydon. Results:— Avon U, West Old Girls 6. Kaiapoi U. Spreydon 6. Nenewai 17, Western Suburbs 9. Avan V. West Old Girls West Old Girls scored three runs In the first innings from hits by J. Davies and J. Patterson. and three errors. Avon opened its scoring in its second bat when M. Gaskell scored on other dismissals. West Old Girls retaliated with hits by P. Holland and 1. Jones to score one run. A homer bj’ H. Williams with K. McCormack on base brought in Avon's only runs in the third innings while West Old Girls was three up, three down. . Avon with hits by J. Clarkson. J. Easton and a two-bag hit by M. Skevlngton tied the game in the fourth innings. In spite of a three-bag hit by A. Bachop, West failed to score. Avon took the lead for the first time In the fifth innings when with two batters out R. Lanini and J. Clarkson hit on and both scored on a two-bag Mt by J. Easton. West fought back; I. Jones hit on and scored on fielders* choices but the aide was dismissed with loaded bases.

A homer by K. McCormick brought in Avon’s only run in the sixth innings and the side scored three runs in Its final effort.

West tried disperately and J. Patterson scored a homer on errors but the following two batters failed to make Base. Kaiapci v. SpreydM Both Katapot and spreydon scored one run tn the first two innings. However, in the third, both teaaM eat about, peering

May scored the only run in the last innings on a fine three-bag hit by S. pateman. H. Diggs, of Spreydon, took the pitching honours with nine strike outs to J. Kimber's (Kaiapoi) four. However, Kimber received greater support from her field than did Diggs and this was the deciding factor in Kaiapoi's win. Maaawal v. Western Suburbs Only three Western Suburbs batters reached base safely, all on errors, and no runner passed first base in its game against Monowai. An unusual catch was taken in the second innings when J. Dalkie skied the ball and B. Turbott tipped the catch into the hands of M. Hapuku. who was backing up well. Monowai almost went through Its batting order twice in •coring 16 runs in Its first innings, although there were only five hits In this period. From thia point Monowai coasted. It did not score in its second innings and the only run of IU third innings was a home by B. Turbott, In its last hat in the fourth innings it added tax rune and the game *" th « «»•«• B.
