Suppressed Evidence
(N.Z. Press Association) WHAKATANE, Dec. 19. A 25-year-old married workman, of Whakatane. who resigned from the Police Force last month, pleaded guilty to a charge of actively suppressing evidence to avoid the arrest of another person when he appeared before Mr L. M. Ritchie, S.M„ in the Whakatane Magistrate's Court. William Joseph Donelly was charged that on or about September 29, at Whakatane, knowing Edwin Bryon Hastie to have had unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl aged 13 at Whakatane on September 25, he actively suppressed evidence against Hastie to enable him to avoid arrest, thereby becoming an accessory after the fact.
DonMly. was remanded till Tuesday for sentence. Detective-Sergeant B. Constable said that Hastie had recently been released from prison after serving a sentence on a second charge of unlawful intercourse with the same girl. He said the offence by Donelly bad taken place during investigations of the charge against Hastie.
