Bridge

Calling a Spade a Spade. By Ben Cohen and Rhoda Barrow. Anthony Blond 142 pp.

Devotees of the Acol system of contract bridge will hail this book with delight, and bridge players of any system will find the specimen hands culled from the great tournaments extremely interesting. Mr Cohen makes his point on behalf of the Acol system although he is, perhaps, rather naive when he places the fault of those Acol players who failed in their bidding to exhaustion or excitement, or both. As is stated in the preface: “Within its basic framework, however, Acol leaves players free to manoeuvre and to use their own judgment, both in attack and in defensive bidding. . . It requires you to use your common sense, at all times calling a spade a spade, and expecting your partner to do the same.”
