VACANCIES—PROFESSIONAL HAMILTON CITY COUNCIL OIY fHGINffIrS WMMMBiI CIVIL ENGINEER’ MECHANICAL, STREETS, DRAINAGE AND WATERWORKS OVERSEERS: CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED from suitably qualified persons for a number of vacancies in the City Engineer’s Department arising from the growth and development of Hamilton. The present population is 60,000 and is expected to rise to 100,000 within 15 years. In addition to the normal engineering work associated with a City Works Department, the following projects are either in hand or are included in the next five years programme: Modern sewage treatment plant and trunk main reticulation and pumping station. Extensive stormwater drainage improvements. New water treatment and pumping station and extensions to reticulation and reservoirs. Transportation survey and preparation of master transport plan. Major street improvements, design and construction of bridges. CIVIL ENGINEER One vacancy for a Staff Engineer (Streets). Must be a registered Engineer or equivalent with experience in Street or Highway work. Preference will be given to applicants qualified in Traffic Engineering to take a responsible part in planning, design and transportation survey. Commencing salary will be in the following range: Staff Engineer £l5BO-£l6BO. Senior Staff Engineer £l7BO-£l9OO. with the opportunity of further promotion to Assistant Streets Engineer. OVERSEERS Vacancies exist for the following Overseers who shall be experienced in the respective classes of work with appropriate qualifications as applicable to the relevant position. MECHANICAL OVERSEER One vacancy with commencing salary within the following range: Overseer Class 1 £1230-£l2BO. Overseer Class Special £1330-£l3BO. Applicants should preferably be A Grade Mechanic with experience in all types of Civil Engineering plant. STREETS OVERSEERS DRAINAGE OVERSEERS Two vacancies exist in each of the above categories with commencing salary within the following range: Overseer Class 3 £lO3O-£lOBO. Overseer Class 2 £ll3O-£llBO. WATERWORKS OVERSEER One vacancy exists with commencing salary within the following range: Overseer Class 3 £lO3O-£lOBO. Overseer Class 2 £ll3O-£llBO. CONSTRUCTION OVERSEER OR SUPERINTENDENT OF WORKS One vacancy exists with commencing salary within the range: Construction Superintendent £1430-£l4BO with opportunity for further promotion. Applicants must be experienced in the control and direction of all classes of Civil Engineering work and should preferably have experience of highway or street construction, drainage and water reticulation, bridge construction and associated maintenance work. Qualification as an engineering assistant or with N.R.B. Certificate would be an advantage. MECHANICAL AND CIVIL ENGINEERS The Engineering Division at Shell House plans, nulFt maintains and improves manufacturing plant, bulk oil storage facilities, marketing equipment, pipelines and transport throughout New Zealand, as well as advising on operating procedures and work methods. The laboratory is new and well equipped. Chemists are also employed in the marketing of a wide range of petrochemicals, which include solvents, resins, synthetic rubbers, plastics, detergents and agricultural chemicals. SALARIES Individual salary arrangements are confidential, but it is Shell’s policy to be one of the leading employers in respect of salaries, pensions, and conditions of work. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Applicants should be men who have completed their degree examinations or professional qualifications. Several years* practical experience since graduation could be an advantage but in any case employment in Shell is approved as qualifying work for the appropriate professional memberships. TRAINING An individual working programme is arranged for each man joining Shell to familiarise him as quickly as possible with oil industry activities, and to enable him to make fullest use of his specialised knowledge. This training is later reinforced by formal courses of several kinds, including overseas training for promising men in key positions. OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADVANCEMENT Each man is encouraged to progress towards the most senior job he is capable of filling in any capacity. Shell staff members who can acquire breadth of knowledge and competence and who are willing and able to lead and work with others, often under conditions of difficulty and pressure, may become eligible for management positions.
