Sunday Advertising On TV

Sir, —I would be interested to hear of comment from the Solicitor-General on the advertisement which appeared on Christchurch viewers’ television screens on Sunday night. The advertisement which appeared immediately after the N.Z.B.C. news about 7.50 p.m., read to the effect: “If it’s news, ring the N-Z.B.C. 'Phone . ..” “The Press” or the “Star” or any other news medium could not get away with this. Why the N.Z.8.C.? Surely they could not claim it not to be an advertisement Yours, etc., WATCHING. December 7, 1965.

[The Solicitor-General, Mr H. R. C. Wild, said: "There is

no law to stop advertising on television on Sundays. , It is merely a matter of policy on the part of the N.Z.B.C. not to screen advertisements on Sunday.”] [The public relations officer of the N.Z.8.C., Mr Lyell Boyes, said: “We do not consider this an advertisement; it is a request for information which our reporters can follow up, in the hope of providing interesting or entertaining items of local news to television viewers and radio listeners. Similar announcements have been made on all New Zealand channels on different days of the week, including Sundays."]
