Double Win Led To Civil Claim
(New Zealand Preet Association) AUCKLAND, December 13. When a 33-year-old Rarotongan won more than £9lOO on a double at Te Rapa races in November 1962, his generous nature led him to a spending spree which included the purchase of a £2OOO car, the solicitor for the plaintiff in a civil action told Mr Justice Moller today.
The family with whom the plaintiff, Tetau Ina, a linesman, was staying, was given £750—£150 for each of the members. When the head of the family, the defendant, George Tangiiau Crummer, aged 44, a fellow Rarotongan, and a bus driver, asked for £lBOO to pay off the house, Tetau Ina was happy to lend him the money, but when Crummer would not return the money after an argument the present proceedings were begun, said Mr I. flash car." So, with Crummer and his son, Danny Crummer, he went out and bought a bright red £2OOO model. Unfortunately, he could not drive and the car was bought in the name of Danny, said counsel. When Ina wanted to use the car the Crammer family would not let him, and this is what caused the argument which led Ina to leaving the family, and starting proceedings.
