Defence Review Early Next Year

(from Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Dec. 14. The defence review, which will give New Zealand’s estimated defence requirements in the next five years, is not likely to be released until early in the New Year.

The Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) when he admitted this today, said the review was received in draft form by the Cabinet some weeks ago and was being examined.

The review would redefine the roles of all three services, and would set out ways in which efficiency may be improved.

Though in no sense will it advocate integration of the three services, it is understood there will be a recommendation for unified systems covering stores, personnel and finance sections.

Perhaps the most important sections will be those setting out requirements in each armed service. This will have important bearing on arms and equipment to be ordered in 1966, though officials suggest defence expenditure in the 1966 estimates will pot be above £45 million.
