But that was not the only reason for her weak showing. . Soon after the field cleared the starting gates she was put off stride when she collided with a rival which was running greenly. Millie Small made an auspicious racing debut by winning the Little River Handicap at Motukarara in Octo<ber. On Saturday she was having her third start since (then.

Her other races were at the New Zealand Cup meeting. There she finished fourth in

the New Zealand Welcome Stakes, but was unplaced in the Pioneer Handicap, won by Rag Doll in Australian and New Zealand race-record time. Track Gallops About a dozen horses being prepared for holiday racing were galloped at speed on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. The trial grass was also available for fast work, but only Shipmate and Omasoag were tried on this track. Shipmate, which has made good progress since the New Zealand Cup meeting, dashed over the first two furlongs of six in 24 l-ssec and completed the distance in Imin 16 l-ssec. It was a very good gallop for A. J. Stokes kept him under a hold. Shipmate’s holiday programme still has to be settled. Like other members of J. C. Tomkinson’s team, with the exception of Hushaway, he has been nominated for sprint races at Wingatui and Washdyke. Hushaway’s holiday racing will probably start at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. He was not entered for the open races at Washdyke as the distances there are either too long or too short Omasong, which will be the lone runner for P. H. Jones’s stable during the holidays, was let off with an easy halfmile. She ran home in Msec and came her last three furlongs in 41 2-ssec. E. G. Low was her rider.

Omasong. which was given an easy time after injuring a tendon when she was galloped on at the New Zealand Cup meeting, will make a fresh start at Washdyke. Barcape (C. T. Wilson) was shading Ibn (E. G. Low) after dashing home from the three furlongs on the plough In 36 2-ssec. They will do their holiday racing on the South Canterbury-North Otago drcult Came From N.I. Ibn, which wu formerly raced in the North Island, will be one of four horses C.

McDonald will take south for holiday racing. The others are Chatsgay and Prince Callan, which are also raced by Mr R. TohilL, and the hack sprinter. Filspar. Town Talk (A. Telfer) and Cumberland (G. W. Mein) teamed up for the last six furlongs of seven. Town Talk ran the distance in Imin 34 3-ssec and came the last six furlongs with Cumberland in Imin 21 2-ssec. They ran home from the half-mile in 52 2-ssec, and came the final three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Cumberland, a member of C. C. -McCarthy’s team, will probably have his first race in the colours of Mr J. R. Pitcaithly at Washdyke. Town Talk is also being prepared for races at the South Canterbury meeting. Coseta (D. N. Hadfield) was the leader throughout a foursided gallop with Baildon (A. Telfer), You Tue (A. R. Swanson), and Ya Kwanza (E. G. Low). They ran five furlongs in Imin 2 4-ssec, the final half-mile in 49 2-ssec, and the last three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. At the end Coseta led Baildon by a neck, with the others two lengths away. Coseta, You Tue, and Ya Kwanza are three of a sizeable team J. L. Barr will take on the holiday circuit. Yacker (A. Telfer) and Early Dawn (D. N. Hadfield) were partnered over a mile. They ran the last seven furlongs in Imin 32 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 4-ssec. and the final three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. Yacker was slightly ahead at the end.

Early Dawn, the beaten favourite in the Derrett Hack Handicap last Saturday, pulled a plate during the race.
