Road Safety Walkers Ignored Footpath

(New Zealand Pres* Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 14. Although students taking part in a road safety walk were facing oncoming traffic, they were strung out six wide on a two-lane road, almost to the centre line, the Auckland Coroner (Mr A. D. Copeland) was told at an inquest at Papakura today.

The Coroner found that Annette Noleen Oakley, aged 19, died in Middlemore Hospital on June 22 from injuries suffered In an accident on June 20. He entered a similar finding in the case of John Coombes, aged 20, who died at Middlemore Hospital on June 28. The Coroner said the accident occurred at night in bad weather. The students were walking on the road although there was a footpath. The two who died were walking from Maramarua to Auckland when they were hit by a car about 5 a.m., said Harold Malcolm Brown, a constable.
