CHRISTMAS POULTRY

Heavy Demand For Birds The demand for Christmas poultry, from the traditional turkey to the ever-popular chicken, is unlikely to be met this season. Most suppliers have already accepted their last orders. A spokesman for one of the largest turkey distributors in New Zealand said his company was able to meet only half the demand for birds. The ume situation was reported by smaller distributors.

Ducks, geese and chickens are meeting an almost bottomless market In the words of one Christchurch supplier: "They are scarce and dear. The North Island wants them all and will take everything we’ve got.” Another Christchurch supplier, while singing the praises of specially-grown chickens, dismissed a turkey dinner as a “cranky craze. He likened the eating qualities of a turkey to those of a small ostrich. "Horrid things,” he said; but agreed the heavy demand for them showed they were a favourite with many. An increased consumption of poultry throughout the year Is believed to have aggravated the Christmas shortage, as producers have been unable to catch up in time. Unfavourable winter conditions also contributed to the problem.
