McKenzie Aims For Record
New Zealand’s Empire Games marathon prospect, D. C. McKenzie, of Greymouth, is expected to make an attempt on the record in the annual “Rangiora 20” road running race from Christchurch to Rangiora this evening.
This will be the West Coast runner’s first competition since a stomach ailment prevented him from running in the Owairaka marathon in Auckland. This cost him a golden opportunity to impress the national selectors. Although today’s race is of relatively minor nature on the national scene, a recordbreaking win would put him once more in the picture. The present record for the race is held by D. Puckett, a brother of the New Zealand
marathon champion and Olympic representative, R. Puckett (Auckland). It stands at Ihr 40min 39sec. Several other prominent athletes have also entered. Among them are S. Gawler (Technical), who won the “New Brighton 50” earlier this year, and D. Reece (St. Martins), runner-up in the Canterbury 10-mile road championship last season. D. Cameron will be making his first competitive appearance of the season, and the 18-year-oid long-distance runner, R. McMillan, will be coming from Wai mate to take part.
