Recent emphasis on the importance of preschool education de- * manded that teachers have a greater under- . standing and knowledge of themselves and the contribution they could make to • their chosen work, Miss Jean Herbison, dean of women at the ' Christchurch Teachers’ College, told students receiving their diplomas from the Kindergarten Teachers’ College yesterday. Miss Herbison discussed the Quality of personality which enabled a perpon 10 be effective in her teaching, but beloved by pupils. Emphasising the need for “self-understanding,” Miss Herbison said, “I believe that it is only as we know and accept ourselves that we can communicate effectively with other people." To develop the necessary "inner qualities” the girls must be realistic about their strengths and weaknesses, abilities and disabilities. Miss Herbison advised the girls to take time out of this “hurly-burly” of life to give as much attention to their inner growth as they obvious-

ly gave to their outward apmust ask yourself—what do 1 have to offer my profession? What are my special skills and how can they be used most effectively? Can I wort harmoniously with others, balancing giving and taking in human relationships? “Can I give support to others, listen as well as speak, be a leader and a follower at appropriate times, and rec-

pect other people sufficiently to allow them to be themselves just as I want to be myself? “Know yourself, accept yourself, be your best self,” she said. “Also, make an effort to find something in the community which will call forth from you a willingness to commit yourself wholeheartedly.”

“Do not drift with the tide, but get on to the crest of the wave and ride it with all the Skill at your command,” she said. Speaking of the dependence of many in this country on material possessions and the physical comforts and pleasures these provided. Miss Herbison said, "Through your personal and professional commitments do not be afraid to develop deep convictions.” A person with confidence in herself had the capacity to communicate with others young and old.
