APATHETIC REACTION
Anti-Social Swimmers The social swimming meeting at the St. Albans pool last Saturday had turned out to be very anti-social, said Mr N. F. Robertson, at the quarterly meeting of the Canterbury Swimming Centre last night Although the season was at its height only three swimmers from outside the host dub, Spreydon, had attended the meeting, he said. The meeting was one of a series planned to give competitors and officials the chance to become better acquainted and to give the competitors some carefree swimming. Mr J. H. Johnston said a carnival at Papanui was unsuccessful, with about 60 swimmers from three dubs competing. But two dubs that had been allocated to Papanui were not represented.
In another meeting in the series the host dub thought it was to be held in the morning and had not booked the pool, said the president (Mr S. Williams).
The management committee, in drawing up the scheme for social carnivals this season had tried to meet the wishes of those who claimed there was too much seriousness in Canterbury owimming, said Mr Williams. “For years the cry has gone up that we have subjected the swimmers to Saturday after Saturday of intensive competition; that we have never let up and given them the chance to be human beings,” he said. “I hope that this system gets a decent trial before it is hung, drawn, quartered and buried.”
