Softball Grounds Cause Concern
The difficulty of holding two matches simultaneously on English Park and the poor state of the diamonds at Hagley Park were discussed at last evening's meeting of the Canterbury Softball Association.
The chairman (Mr M. Bell) described English Park as “the biggest headache we have got” He said that there wu not enough room to play two men's matches simultaneously. “It Is difficult enough to cope with one men's game and a women’s game,” he added.
“To whom do we complain about having the grass cut at Hagley Park?” asked Mr P. Joyce. The association paid a diamond fee. and was entitled to good grounds, said Mr Bell. Last Saturday week the grass was excellent but it was scraggy on Saturday and, unless it was cut, it would be much worse this week. A motion by Mrs J. Gibson, that a letter be sent to the City Council, was carried unanimously. Representative Games The association agreed to an Otago request that the match between the two provinces in Christchurch be put back a fortnight, to March 26. If the New Zealand Softball Association accepts a late challenge from Canterbury the province will play South-
land for the Jeffries Cup at Invercargill on March 12. The first round of the John Lennon national inter-dub tournament, between clubs from Canterbury, West Coast and Marlborough, will be played at Greymouth on January 22. The second round will be at Christchurch on February 12 and the national finals, also at Christchurch, early in March.
