DEATH OF TROUT
Investigation In Matamata “The Preu" Special Service AUCKLAND. Dec. 14. Fisheries experts are investigating the sudden death of dozens of trout in the Waiomou stream, one of the most popular trout-fishing rivers in the Matamata county.
On Sunday and yesterday trout of all sizes, ranging from five fat 91b fish to fingerlings, were found floating dead in the stream * washed up along the banks. At least 50 dead trout are reported to have been taken from the stream.
Fishermen who caught apparently healthy trout in the river on Saturday are now concerned that their catches may have been contaminated. Mr P. N. Gailie. vice-presi-dent of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, said the Waiomou stream had been one of the most popular in the Matamata district for trout fishermen. It always produced big fish. “The society is very concerned at what has happened,” he said. “We have made a thorough examination
and will take whatever steps are necessary tn ensure there is no recurrence.
“Pollution of streams is a problem throughout the world,” he said. “In New Zealand the intensification of fanning and growth of towns are going to place increased pressure on our streams. “The soon* we become aware of the problem and take steps to combat it, the better.”
