Mountain Safety
! Sir,—Would the DirectarI General of the Forest Service . produce figures to back up his statement that there are . 10 deaths and fifty shooting , accident among deerstalkers . on hunting trips each yeat. 1 Ind this very hard to believe
and feel that he is including all mountain and river accidents or all other shooting accidents such as duckshooters, small-game hunters, and careless handling of firearms in the hone. I would also like it made clear whether the Mountain Safety Organisation is for all mountain users or just for deerstalkers. Mr Poole also states: “Twice as many shooting mishaps occur in this field as elsewhere.” Is thia true? If so, is it a percentage o" deerstalkers as against a percentage of other firearm handlers? —Yours, etc., ANOTHER TARGET. December 8, 1965. IThe Director-General of Forests (Mr A. L. Poole) replies: “The figures of 10 deaths and 50 accidents were intended to relate to ail shooting accidents in a year, and not just to hunting trips. However, it is true that twice as many shooting accidents occur in the field as elsewhere.”]
