Chch.Firm Wins Award

The Christchurch firm of Carbonic Ice, Ltd., which has sold carbon dioxide and dryice making equipment to 27 countries, including Alaska, has won New Zealand’s first award for the export of manufactured goods. An Auckland firm, Associated Engineering, Ltd., was second, and Morrison Industries, Ltd., of Hastings, and D. McL. Wallace, Ltd., of Auckland, were placed equal third. The award takes the form of the sft wooden plaque (shown in the photograph) for an office or a board room wall. The award was given by the “New Zealand Industrial Register” for the company which showed the greatest enterprise, ingenuity, skill and drive in breaking into markets abroad with goods manufactured in New Zealand. A dozen entries were received from manufacturers in Auckland, Wellington, Hastings and Christchurch. The judges included Messrs J. C. Fletcher, of Auckland, T. W. Wehtje of Wellington, and W. G. V. Fernie, of

Christchurch. They said in their report that they were impressed by the quality of the entries, which showed that some manufacturers were

making an impact in export markets. The judges said the winning entry was a great per-

formance. showing enterprise, drive, and skill in every stage. Sophisticated Markets The company had broken into the most sophisticated markets. It had done so consistently and with a volume of sales. To do this, said the judges, Carbonic Ice, Ltd.'s design services and fabrication services had required competence of a high order. This had apparently been backed with an efficient Installation service from Carbonic Ice, they said. In placing Associated Engineering, Ltd., of Auckland, second, the judges said that this company’s export campaign was a sensible one which had excellent prospects for long-term success. Particularly commendable was the firm’s decision to try to create an image of New Zealand as a source of supply of high-quality engineering. The prize was designed and made by a Christchurch artist, Mr P. M. Mulcahy. The managing-director of Carbonic Ice (Mr T. L. Uren) said his firm planned to make a feature of the wooden plaque prize in the company board room.
