CRICKET YOUTH

Fourteen fours and four sixes two of them clearing the fence, helped to make up Jimmy Hutchison’s score of 108 not out on the Lancaster Park south ground on Saturday. Playing for Lancaster Part in the B grade Jimmy made his runs in just over an hour. He hit the ball tremendously hard but also stroked one bail well, playing some good looking shots. In the B2 match between Lancaster Park and St. Albans some good batting was seen. Hlehael Hawke, of Lancaster Park, batted very well to make 64 not out and while for St Albans Owen Rutledge showed himself to be a batsman of promise in scoring 36 not out

Mark Gilbert is a wicketkeeper showing more than average promise. A Burnside A player, Mark ib extremely nimble and on Saturday made a leg-side stumping as good as could be seen in any grade cricket.

Throughout the Schoolboy competition on Saturdays many wickets are being lost with unneccessary run-outs. Last week the West-University A team lost three out of their first four wickets in this manner chiefly because of poor roWlng siy! backing-up. With more accuracy Paul Haaunaad should become a successful off-spin bowler. Paul plays* for the old Collegians A team and although he sometimes turns the bell quite sharply he is not yet accurate enough to be dangerous. Like all his older brothers the Sydenham A player Ivan Thomsen is a naturally aggressive batsman. On Saturday, although his innings was short-lived, he gave some indication of his aggressive ability when he hit a tremendous six back over the bowlers head. However, Ivan must learn to hit the right ball hard as he gets himself

out far too often playing risky shots.

A batsman Showing improvement this season is lan Borthwick, of the St Albans B team. lan's favourite shot is the square, cut but he also drives well, especially on the off-side. Although be bowls quite quickly the H 5.0.8. B player, Peter Dunne, would be well advised to cut his run down considerably. Not only would this conserve his energy but also it would probably improve Us accuracy also. lan Borthwick, batting for St Albans on Saturday, showed he is developing into a sagacious cricketer who is constantly looking for a gap in the field when placing and choosing his shots. Fraser Ford kept up his good bowling performance on Saturday with four useful wickets for 15 runs playing for Old CoHegians at Hagley. James Angus showed good defensive batting and commendable concentration batting for Old Cotiegians against Sydenham at Hagley Back on Saturday. Typical of a new generation of young cricketers who are well developed for the age is Peter Dunn, who playa for H. 5.0.8. Well-grown and about sft Bin, although only aged 13, Peter is bowling with pace and lift off the pitch and has a useful inswinger which the opposition found considerable difficulty in playing on Saturday.
