Firsts For Mr Kirk
The new Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) can claim several “firsts."
He is the first man to be president cf the New Zealand Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition at the same time.
He is the first Labour member of Parliament to have defeated a sitting leader in the party caucus.
He is the first South Island member of Parliament to lead his party. His predecessor , (Mr Nordmeyer) represented a South Island electorate, bat was a North Island member when -chosen to lead bis party. He is also the biggest in weight and height
