Impressive Win By Bob Duff

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND.

Bob Duff showed all the speed for which he has become known, and real gameness as well, when he won the Cockerton Memorial, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Dargaville yesterday.

Bob Duff went to the front before the end of a furlong and stayed there in spite of a determined challenge by El Cortez. The Cockerton Memorial was Bob Duff’s first race in open company and gave him his fourth wiln in his last five starts, so that it was a notable victory on all counts. When it comes to the more important summer events at Ellerslie he is now certain to be among the most discussed horses. He is a handsome four-year-old entire by the former fine galloper, Lord Moss, from Cairnduff, trained at Te Rapa by B. M. S. Brindle for Mr H. D. Matthews. Bob Duff already has a mile win in fast time at Ellerslie to his credit this season and a victory at Te Rapa, over a mile and a quarter, the distance this time. Big Advantage His free galloping gives him a big advantage in these day of big fields and the way in which he runs his races out suggests he might well get a mile and a half or further. With Honourable, Bob Duff dominated the betting on the Cockerton Memorial, but whereas Bob Duff ran so well Honourable was a failure. As everyone expected. Honourable was among the tailenders with a round to go, but to the disappointment of her backers she showed none of her usual finishing dash. In the end she beat four. El Cortez ran most creditably and it seemed for a few strides a furlong out that she might win. Topsil also performed well, although two lengths away from the first two. Bob Duff paid £3 2s and £1 17s on the win and place and he combined with Pheroz Pride for a T.A.B. double of £5 6s, the smallest ever at Dargaville. Pheroz Pride outclassed six opponents in the second leg, the Clune Handicap. A check at the half mile sent her back a couple of lengths, yet she won easily. G. F. Hughes sent her after the pacemaker, Mac’s Pride, as soon as they made the home turn and she ran ahead in no time. It was an impressive performance. Four Wins Pheroz Pride has now won four times in her five starts. On the other occasion she was an unlucky second. She is a handsome three-year-old filly trained by G. W. B. Greene at Takanini for Mr E. C. Loisel, of Gisborne. The weather was fine and the track fast. The totalisator, on course handled £33,021 10s, including £3355 10s on doubles against £30,331 last year. Off-course betting on the meeting amounted to £102,895 15s, made up of win and place £45,336 10s and doubles £57,562 ss. The off-course substitute was Pheroz Pride.
