“The Press” Special Service
AUCKLAND.
Auckland’s top miler, K. McDell will have things made to order for a bid to run his first sub-four-minute mile at the Rothmans international meeting at Western Springs on Tuesday.
He has been selected in a mile field which includes the Olympic bronze medaiist, J L Davies, the world 1000 metres record-holder, Jurgen May (East Germany), and the leading Jugoslav 1500 metres runner. Simo Vazic. McDell has been running. Impressively in the Auckland centre’s Saturday afternoon meetings, but conditions have been against fast times. Has Strong Finish
The pace is sure to be on from the start on Tuesday, as Davies will not be waiting around to be outsprinted by M’v in the final lap. This will suit McDell. who prefers to sit behind the loaders and use his strong finish. He said he trained much border last winter than at any other time in his «■ and honed he would be sharp enough in time for the race.
McDell will have the added incentive of running a time fast enough to impress the Empire Games selectors. Last season, at Napier, he finished a close second to P. !g. Snell, running 4min 2.8 Bailie’s Big Task In the 5000 metres, a strong field headed by the national six-mile champion. W. D. Baillie, has been selected to face the overseas challenge of Kipchonge Kedno (Kenya) and Cranic Cervan (Jugoslavia). Atkinson, who finished second to N. I. Scott in the last national three-mile championship, is included in the field, as is M Ryan (Tokoroa), run-ner-up to Baillie in the New Zealand six-mile championship Scott has withdrawn from the race because of a slipped disc which has curtailed both his training and racing for at least a,month.
