NEARLY UPSET

Not Regular Players

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE.

A balding pair of tennis players, L Bergelin of Sweden and Dr. J. Fraser of Australia, nearly caused an upset in the first round of the Victorian doubles championship in Melbourne yesterday against R. Taylor and L. Gerrard.

Taylor and Gerrard eventually won, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 9-7, after having set point against them in the third set and trailing 2-5 in the fourth set. Bergelin, who is manager of a young Swedish team in Australia for experience, is now 40. He last visited Melbourne in the mid ’sos and has not played for 10 years. Fraser, 36-year-old brother of former Wimbledon champion, Neale Fraser, only plays tennis as a week-end recreation.

Bergelin said after the match that Gerrard’s good returns of service were the deciding factor in the match.
