UNUTILISED PLANT

Freezing Works Problem

It was difficult for an executive of a freezing company to put a case for new facilities to his board of directors and then to find that the new equipment was not allowed to be used, Mr W. M. Cleland, general manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, told farmers attending the North Canterbury district export lamb competition. Today there was unutilised killing capacity in freezing works from Pareora to Picton. In the Islington works in which the competition was being held, there was a chain upstairs that could be working in two or three days, he said.

There was unfortunately a large degree of restriction by the freezing workers’ union through the daily killing quotas on various works and he, like others, had unutilised plant. “I hope that in due course wisdom will prevail,” said Mr Cleland.
