EYREWELL FOREST
Deferred Action
The Canterbury Progress League deferred action on the future development of Eyrewell Forest, till a Forestry Service officer had addressed the league on the subject in February. The league’s land development committee’s view was that every effort should be made to develop reliable forestry sites in Canterbury. The league adopted a recommendation of its land development committee that a committee be formed, sponsored by the league, to develop the Lake Ellesmere area.
An invitation would be sent to various bodies for forming the committee. These would include the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, the Commercial Fishermen’s Association, the Lake Settlers Association, the Canterbury Power Boat and Water Ski Club and the North Canterbury Game Shooters’ Club. The chairman of the land development committee (Mr H. H. Deans) said the committee felt that the potential of the Lake Ellesmere area should be developed for the benefit of Canterbury. “It does not wish to destroy the assets of one section of the community, to the advantage of another but feels a co-ordinated effort can give benefit for all,” said Mr Deans. He said that the lake should provide recreational value to the community and had considerable agricultural and pastoral value potential.
