Owens On Tax Charge
(N.Z P A.-Reuter—Copyright) CHICAGO
The former Olympic star, Jesse Owens, has pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to file tax returns for the years 1959-62 on an income of £21,040. A district court judge adjourned the case on Wednesday to allow time for Owens and the prosecution to file legal motions. Owens, now 52 and a public relations counsellor, could receive a four-year gaol term and a £14,400 fine if convicted. In the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, Owens won four gold medals.
