Contemporary Italian Sculpture

Sir,—While taking photographs of works in the above exhibition at the Durham Street Art Gallery, I was surprised how quiet and undisturbed my peaceful activities were! It was delightful, and I was happy in my enjoyment of these wonderful works. Then I thought, almost with guilt, shouldn’t there be other people here to share my pleasure? Here is an exhibition of sculpture by the foremost contemporary sculptors in Italy, a country renowned for its sculpture over thousands of years. This assembly of works demonstrates that the brilliance of Italy’s sculptors is today not dimmed by comparison with the past. Is there perhaps something wrong with the advertising or something wrong with the people of Christchurch that they don’t flock to see this splendid exhibition?—Yours, etc., ERIC J. DOUDNEY, Senior Lecturer in Sculpture, University of Canterbury. November 24, 1965.
