Holds Equal Rank In Police Force, Army
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Nov. 22. . By his promotion to detective superintendent today. Detective Chief Inspector R. J. Walton, of Wellington, has
become the first New Zealander to achieve equal rank in both the police force and Army. He is a territorial lieutenant-colonel.
“A remarkable achievement” said an Army officer today. Some members of the Royal Family held equal services rank, he said. However, the only dual appointment similar to Mr Walton’s that he could recall was the
three-service rank of the then Lord Louis Mountbatten as Commando chief during the Second World War. Mr Walton was recently awarded the 0.8. E.
Aged 43. he is drum major of the Auckland Police Pipe Band, was officer-in-charge of the 196.3 Bassett road murder investigation and in charge
of police operations during the Auckland Prison fire and riot last July. Nearly three years ago he became the first officer on the Army active list to hold both a police and an Army commission simultaneously.
