FIRE BOARD ELECTIONS
“Anomalous System”
The Riccarton Borough Council is concerned at “the anomalous system of voting” in the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board elections. The chairman of the finance and by-laws committee (Cr R. W. J. Harrington) told the council last night that of the 283 votes cast by the six counties and boroughs around Christchurch the Waimairi county held 154 votes.
This meant that the Waimairi county could not be outvoted in the election of representatives and there was little point in the Riccarton, Halswell, Heathcote, Paparua and Lyttelton councils exercising their votes. The Waimairi council has suggested that it be given one separate member on the board and other councils involved in joint representation have one between them. The Waimairi council asked the Riccarton council to support an approach to the Fire Board to amend the system of representation. The Riccarton council agreed to this or any other method designed to remove the anomaly.
