LONG-RANGE TALKS

Freak Radio Reception

Normal walkie-talkie hand sets which normally have a range, at best, of 15 miles have in the last three days been reaching distances of 500 miles and more.

Operators in Christchurch last night reported holding conversations with other operators in Auckland, Whangarei, and Hamilton with readings louder and clearer than for any Christchurch conversation in normal times.

According to M" E. Forrester, of Papanui, the freak reception over such distances is caused by skip-signals in the ionosphere. Such signals only occur very infrequently Mr Forrester said the last two days’ exchange of conversations have been the first over the 15-mile limit.

Britain And E.E.C.—The British Foreign Secretary (Mr Michael Stewart) told Parliament yesterday that Britain was still ready to join the European Economic Community provided its essential interests could be safeguarded.—(London, Nov. 23.)
