Train Robbers Well Guarded
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright? LONDON, Nov. 22. Durham Prison’s maximum security wing was reinforced with armed soldiers as fears grew of a determined attempt to free four of the great train robbers believed to be held there.
The Home Secretary (Sir Frank Soskice) announced that an armed guard had been provided. The move followed persistent rumours during the last week that an attempt would be made to free the four robbers—Douglas Goody, Roy James, Thomas Wisbey and James Hussey.
Durham’s maximum security E wing has 10 cells specially modified for long-term prisoners There is closed circuit television controlled from an office with bullet-proof windows, and a direct link with Durham police station, 50 yards away. Goody is known to wear
special “escape risk” clothing and to have his outer clothing taken away from him at night. It has always been believed that he and James know the location of the bulk of the £2,500,000 still missing from the train robbery.
The latest tip to reach the police was that 30 men in London had been briefed for the escape and some of them had been armed.
One press report said a London gang planned to land
a helicopter inside the prison. Two more of the train robbers have already escaped from gaol.
