Local Bodies And University Halls
“Surely Cr. L. J. C. Witte of the Mount Herbert County Council was not speaking seriously when, in response to an'appeal for support for the university halls of residence, he remarked that ‘this sort of thing is outside the scope of what we collect rates for,’ ” said the president of the appeal (Sir James Hay) yesterday.
"It is a well-recognised principle of local body administration that support is given to worthy institutions in any community,” Sir James Hay said. “This principle was clearly demonstrated by local bodies throughout Canterbury when their support, yearly, was given some years ago to the Canterbury Museum. That support transformed the
finances of the museum, lifting this wonderful institution to the place of high eminence it enjoys today. “Exactly the same principle applies in regard to the halls of residence appeal. After all, the sons and daughters of country residents who come to Christchurch to study at the university are those who will benefit most from the erection of halls of residence. “The city has already handsomely supported the appeal. Is it too much to ask the counties to do likewise?” Sir James Hay asked.
