The ’Possum Hunters

Two Auckland boys, aged 14, returned safely home this week after two nights out in the Waitakere ranges. After rescuing their dog from an opossum trap they became lost, the Press Association report says. “We made a rough shelter out of a piece of “ tarpaulin we were carrying ”, one of them said later. “Both of us had sleeping bags, so it wasn’t bad, “really”. Strange, perhaps, that they happened to be carrying a piece of tarpaulin, and their sleeping bags. Enterprising of them, though, to trap opossums and catch eels and cook them. Were Peter Chant and David Mills really “ lost ”? Or were they, in fact, having a high old time? It doesn’t really matter; the lesson to be learned from their experience is that survival in the New Zealand bush calls for a modicum of equipment and bushcraft—and plenty of initiative.
