NEW FACES AT NORTH BEACH
COME important newcomers have swelled the ranks of the North Beach Surf Life-saving Club in recent weeks. The latest is Miss A. McMillan, the national women’s freestyle champion in pool swimming, who had her first taste of surf competition last Sunday. She established superiority over her rivals early in the women’s surf race, and won the event comfortably. A. Kindred, a strongly built junior who reached a boys’ backstroke final at the national championships last season, should make his mark at North Beach. His physique stamps him as a possible champion in the surf. As a 14-year-old last
summer he won the provincial senior pool title for 1650 yd freestyle. About two weeks ago a well-built youth appeared at North Beach and sought permission to enter the senior surf race. To the surprise of the club’s officials, the unknown swimmer pulled away from L. D. Mclntosh and D. Dalton, two of Canterbury’s leading surfers, and won handsomely. It was not until some time later that the identity of the newcomer was revealed. He was W. Brown, holder of all the Canterbury senior and junior breaststroke records and vice-captain of the New Zealand junior team in Australia two seasons ago.
