SUPPORT FOR WAIMAIRI
Membership Of Fire Roard
A move by the Waimairi County Council to seek separate representation on the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board received unanimous support at the monthly meeting of the Halswell County Council. Before the council was a letter from the Waimairi County Council seeking its support for a proposal whereby Waimairi would have its own representative on the board and other combined county and borough councils another representative. At present all counties and boroughs are represented by the one board member.
The Halswell chairman (Cr. J. G. Pethig) said he thought the proposal was a step in the right direction. It would give other local bodies “a chance,” he said. Mr Pethig said that from discussions by other local bodies, he felt that whatever they did Waimairi could override it. “At present Waimairi can outvote all the others put together.” Cr. D. P. Graham moved that the council support the proposal.
