Branch Supports Greymouth Venture
The Greymouth Jockey Club has been congratulated on its move to substitute allgalloping programmes of seven races for eight-race programmes which cater for two trotting events.
The Grey mouth club’s changes for its two-day summer meeting on November 27 and 29 have gained the approval of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Owners’, Trainers’ and Breeders’ Association. The Canterbury branch of the association decided this week to write to the Greymouth club congratulating it on its venture. RICCARTON SUPPORT
Members said they felt sure galloping owners and trainers would give the Greymouth meeting generous support. One Riccarton trainer said that although he had only one horse engaged at the Westland meeting this weekend he would have a team of five at the Greymouth meeting. Members drew attention to the nuisance created by horse floats parked on the horse walk fronting the new boxes on the racecourse property at times of race meetings at Riccarton. It was decided to write to
the Canterbury Jockey Club asking it if space for parking the floats could be provided elsewhere. Members said that the club’s move to build the boxes was to be applauded, but that horses going to and leaving the tracks on training mornings were being hampered by the parked floats. The association will write to the Canterbury A. and P. Association asking for the establishment of a class for thoroughbred yearlings at its show.
It was reported that thoroughbreds predominated in the present class 39 for yearlings. Entrants for the yearling sales gained valuable experience in the show, members said, but there were objections to having the youngsters in the ring by 9 a.m. when they were not being judged until 1 p.m. The A. and P. Association will be requested to arrange for the yearlings to be judged early in the morning.
