Princess Attends New York Ball
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, November 21. Princess Margaret spent her first full day in New York on Friday. About 1000 distinguished guests crowded the Waldorf Hotel ballroom to see the Princess and her husband at the end of the hectic day. New York bagpipers skirled a greeting as the Princess walked into the room. She wore a diamond tiara and sky blue organza gown, heavily embroidered with crystal diamante and blue satin stitch in a diamond motif. Frank Sinatra was to have been among those providing entertainment at the ball, but a British spokesman said the singer had had to cancel his appearance because of laryngitis. The guests included the New York Governor (Mr Rockefeller) and Mr John Hay Whitney, the former United States Ambassador to Britain.
The ball was held to launch the Winston Churchill Memorial Fund in the United States. It was sponsored jointly by the English-Speak-ing Union, the Pilgrims of
the United States and the fund organisers. Earlier yesterday, the Royal couple drove round Central Park for half an hour while police checked the Empire State Building. They had been on their way to visit the building when a telephone call from a woman warned that the building would be blown up.
