SHIELD SQUAD
21 Chosen To Train The only surprising feature of the Canterbury Plunket Shield training squad announced at the week-end by the sole selector (Mr W. McD. Anderson) is its size. There are 21 players—but with so many batsmen yet to produce convincing form, the net had *o be cast fairly wide. Only four of the chosen players are without first-class experience. They are the 19-yaar-old Old Bovs batsman. C t Bull: R. K Allen, the West Christchurch-L'niversitv wicket-keeper: the Riccarton ’keeper, G. R. McAulay; and M. L. Ryan, the Old Boys offspinner.
The squad is: R. K. Alien. B. Andrews, G. A. Bartlett, B. A. Bolton, J. W. Burtt, C. L 8011, D. L. Gallop. R. M. Gearry, B. G. Hadlee, B. F. Hastings, I. R. Hartland. J. W. Kiddey, R. C. Motz, J. M. Mclntyre, G. R. McAulay, J. M. Ruston, M. L. Ryan, P. A Sharp, B. R. Taylor (South Canterbury), K. Thomson, J. R. Veitch.
On performances this season. the Lancaster Park spinners, D. J, McKendry and B. C. Irving, are the unluckiest to miss selection.
